MODULE 1 · Learning Theory, Adult Learning & Effective Teaching
Prof. Ronel Maart
PhD, MPhil, PGDip Community Dent, BChD — University of the Western Cape, South Africa
Prof. Maart is Deputy Dean (Academic) at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of the Western Cape, with extensive experience across the private and public health sectors. Her expertise spans curriculum development, competency-based education and assessment, and Health Professions Education, with a particular interest in digital competencies in the dental curriculum. She is a SAFRI Fellow, chaired the TUFH 2024 Scientific Committee, and led a successful AFREhealth research grant as principal investigator. She serves on the council of the South African Association of Health Education (SAAHE).

Dr. Roy Mubuuke
PhD (Health Sciences), MMed (Radiology), MMed (Medical Education) — Makerere University, Uganda
Dr. Mubuuke is Associate Professor of Radiology and Imaging at the School of Medicine, Makerere University, and holds a post-doctoral fellowship in Bioethics. A FAIMER Fellow, he led the establishment of the AFREhealth Prof. James Hakim Leadership Development Programme, which earned him the NIH-Fogarty International leadership award, and currently leads the AFREhealth Eastern Africa Regional Chapter. He has supervised over 20 PhD and 40 Master's students and published more than 150 journal articles in radiology and medical education.
MODULE 3 · Curriculum Design & Development
Dr. Innocent Besigye
PhD (Family Medicine), MMed, MBChB — Makerere University, Uganda
Dr. Besigye is a Family Physician and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at Makerere University. He holds an MBChB and MMed from Makerere and a PhD in Family Medicine from Stellenbosch University, alongside a SAFRI Fellowship in Health Professions Education. He has contributed extensively to undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum design and review. He serves as President of the Association of Family Physicians of Uganda, President of the African Forum for Primary Health Care (AfroPHC), and President of the Eastern Central Southern Africa College of Family Physicians.
MODULE 4 · Competency-Based Education (CBE)
Prof. Adesola Ogunniyi
Emeritus Professor of Medicine — College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria
Prof. Ogunniyi was co-Principal Investigator of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) in Ibadan and formerly chaired the AFREhealth Task Work Group on Competency-Based Curriculum. In 2025 he received the Nature Lifetime Award for mentoring in science. A neurologist who completed a neuroepidemiology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (USA), he has trained and mentored over 80 neurologists and early-career researchers within and beyond Nigeria.
MODULE 5 · Mentorship in Teaching & Learning
Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi
MBChB, MMed (ObGyn), MPH, PhD, MBE, FAAS — KEMRI, Kenya
Prof. Bukusi is a Senior Principal Clinical Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and a Research Professor at the University of Washington, and a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. She co-established the KEMRI Research Care and Training Programme (RCTP) and brings decades of experience in HIV care, socio-behavioural and biomedical research, and mentoring health and research personnel. Founding chairperson of the National Bioethics Society of Kenya, she directs LEA-WH, a fellowship programme working to transform the health of women in Africa.

Judy N. Khanyola
RN, MSc, FAAN — University of Global Health Equity, Rwanda
Judy Khanyola is a Registered Community Health Nurse/Midwife, Family Nurse Practitioner, and pan-African nursing leader, currently serving as Vice President of AFREhealth. She was the inaugural Chair of the Center for Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda and has spearheaded nursing and midwifery education reforms across the continent. An inaugural Fellow of the African Union/Africa CDC/Harvard Global Nursing Leadership Program, she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a recipient of the ANAC Global HIV Award.

Dr. Faith Nawagi
PhD (Health Professions Education), MPH, BSc Nursing & Midwifery — INTEALTH (ECFMG/FAIMER), Africa
Dr. Nawagi is the Africa Regional Representative for INTEALTH (ECFMG and FAIMER), leading the implementation of health professions education, accreditation, and quality assurance programmes across the continent. She holds a PhD in Health Professions Education from Makerere and Ghent University, alongside a background in nursing and midwifery. She led the mapping of accreditation and quality assurance standards for basic medical education across the WHO AFRO region, has served on the AFREhealth Governing Council, and is a recipient of the 2024 AFREhealth Citation of Honour.

Prof. Elsie Kiguli-Malwadde
MBChB, MMed, MScHPE — ACHEST / AFREhealth
Prof. Kiguli-Malwadde is Deputy Executive Director of the African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST) and former Director of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI). A radiologist and former Head of Radiology at Makerere University, she holds a Master's in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University and is a FAIMER Fellow. A founder and immediate past President of AFREhealth, she pioneered the AFREhealth pedagogy course. She has authored more than 80 publications and received the 2024 CUGH Distinguished Leadership Award.
MODULE 9 · eLearning Technologies and AI in Pedagogy
Dr. Brian Halubanza
PhD (Computer Science — AI & IoT) — Mulungushi University, Zambia
Dr. Halubanza is Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at Mulungushi University and Director of the Zambia national centre of the International Institute of Online Education (under UNESCO-ICHEI). An AI specialist affiliated with AFREhealth, he lectures in Artificial Intelligence, AI in Medicine, IoT, and Cloud Computing. His research applies AI, the Internet of Things, and data analytics to health systems, advocating for scalable and affordable digital health solutions to strengthen primary healthcare across Africa.
