About the Programme
The AFREhealth Pedagogy Course for Health Professions Education is a faculty development programme that equips health professions educators across Africa with the core teaching skills of an effective educator. Many faculty enter teaching roles on the strength of their clinical or research expertise, yet with little or no formal training in education. This course addresses that gap.
Delivered across ten modules, the programme builds competencies in learning theory and adult learning, curriculum design and evaluation, student assessment, competency-based education, mentorship, interprofessional education, quality assurance, eLearning and AI, and educational scholarship. Participants also design and implement a practical educational project at their home institution aimed at improving an aspect of teaching and learning. Overall, the programme seeks to create a critical mass of well-grounded educators who go on to teach, mentor, and lead educational improvement within their own institutions.
Target Audience
The programme is designed for mid-level and senior faculty from AFREhealth health professions training institutions across Africa. Participants are deliberately drawn from a range of health professions to create an interprofessional mix and promote future collaboration. Eligible participants include mid-level and senior faculty who contribute to teaching, learning, and research at their institutions or teaching hospitals, as well as non-university health professionals involved in the teaching and assessment of students — for example, clinicians based in teaching hospitals — who demonstrate interest and commitment.
Mode of Training
The course is delivered fully online over ten modules, combining self-paced learning with live, facilitator-led sessions:
- AFREhealth Learning Management System (LMS) — a Moodle-based platform (learn.afrehealth.org) that hosts all module content, learning materials, activities, and assessments, which participants access at their own pace throughout the course.
- Virtual facilitated sessions — live, expert-led sessions delivered via Zoom, in which module facilitators guide discussion, demonstrate concepts, and support participants in applying their learning to practice.
- Mentorship — participants are supported by experienced mentors who guide reflection, offer feedback, and accompany them in developing and implementing their educational projects, including dedicated reflective sessions across the course.
- Educational project — participants apply the knowledge and skills gained by designing and implementing a project to improve teaching and learning at their home institution.
