Jehu Iputo- Ugandan physiologist, medical educator, and academic leader. He studied medicine (MBChB) at Makerere University in Kampala (1976—1981) and later pursued advanced training in physiology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He is currently a Professor of Physiology and the Head of the Department of Health Professions Education at Busitema University, Faculty of Health Sciences in Tororo, Uganda. Prof Iputo has had a long and impactful career spanning Uganda and South Africa. His research and leadership emphasized pedagogy, curriculum development, and training doctors for African contexts. He served for over 28 years at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha, South Africa (formerly the University of Transkei), where he held several key positions: - Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology and Medical Biochemistry; - Head of the Department of Medical Education; and Director of the School of Medicine.
Prof Iputo played a pivotal role in developing WSU's innovative problem- based and community-based medical training program, which focuses on training doctors for rural and underserved communities. He has widely published (with dozens of papers and hundreds of citations) in the fields of physiology, medical education, curriculum development, clinical nutrition, and health equity. He is recognized for his expertise in pedagogy, teacher training, and addressing health inequalities in Africa. He is a dedicated educator and researcher and continues to contribute to medical training and health sciences across East and Southern Africa.
