The Health Economics Technical Working Group (HE TWG) is a newly created working group within AFREhealth. Health Economics is the application of economics to health to deal with the problems associated with resource scarcity, which is a feature of every sector of the economy. As a result of this resource scarcity, important choices have to be made with respect to how best to use the available resources. Health Economics is a growing field and particularly important in resource limited settings such as Africa.
The objectives of the HE TWG are as follows:
• To build health economics capacity in Africa through the development of a webinar series, workshops, short courses, research and other relevant activities aimed at providing professional resources and skill-building opportunities to health professionals in Africa.
• To create a platform to undertake activities that will facilitate research linkages, education and information exchange in health economics.
• To promote the importance of health economics to decision makers in Africa and support evidence-based resource allocation decision making in Africa.
• To support AFREhealth institutional members and Universities in Africa with the inclusion of health economics in their curriculum.
