PROJECT TITLE:  Institut Superieur Des Techniques Medicales De Kinshasa (ISTM/KIN)

PROJECT YEAR 1 RECAP

STRIPE materials were translated from English to French, ensuring the STRIPE training was available for use by francophone STRIPE HIV partners. In collaboration with Lubumbashi, N’Djili Reference General Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital, and Center of Mixed Medicine of Yolo, one STRIPE training-of-trainers was conducted, resulting in 20 facilitators trained. These facilitators then trained 25 learners during two learner workshops focusing on the four core modules (1, 3, 4, 17) and two additional ones (9, 16).

PROJECT YEAR 2 SUMMARY

Before starting training, all STRIPE materials were translated into French, and made available to francophone STRIPE HIV partners through the AFREhealth LMS. Translated materials were then used to support the training of 25 facilitators and 100 learners at two training sites, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. At both sites, learners participated in two-day in-person trainings and were taught the four core modules (1, 3, 4, 17) plus four additional modules (2, 9, 13, 19).

MAIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Successfully translated all STRIPE training material into French
  • Trained 25 facilitators and 100 learners, meeting their proposed training goals
  • Added DRC-specific context to each module, enriching them with the concrete problems of the DRC and Africa.
  • This interprofessional training was a success, as it was identified that this was the first time these interdisciplinary professionals had worked together to combine their experiences and knowledge on HIV and COVID-19 team care.
  • During training, the decision was made to keep learners in larger discussion groups, which resulted in a greater exchange of ideas from which all participants benefited.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

  • While it was successfully completed, coordinating both material translation and conducting trainings within this short time frame was difficult.

INNOVATING HIV TRAINING DURING COVID-19

Several best-practices were identified to ensure the training could continue in-person during COVID-19. All learners and facilitators wore masks and cleaning products were purchased to keep the training rooms sanitized. In addition, learners were split among several rooms, to decrease the number of individuals within each room.

BROADER IMPACT

Appreciation for the knowledge and skills gained from the STRIPE modules has led to training partners modelling the curricula of other courses at their institutions focused on HIV/AIDS after the STRIPE modules. In addition, the ISTM/KIN team would like to support the expansion of STRIPE to other Francophone countries in Africa. To disseminate the success of this program, a report is being prepared to be presented to the Minister of Public Health and the Ministry of Higher and University Education.

IMPACT VIGNETTES

“Learners…improved their knowledge after having much more practical interprofessional training. This is the case of a doctor in Lubumbashi who immediately improved his doctoral student text which he will defend very soon.” – Training Team
