Susan Van Schalkwyk

Susan van Schalkwyk, M Phil, PhD., is Professor in Health Professions Education and Director of the Centre for Health Professions Education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Apart from her supervision of doctoral and Master’s students, she has more than 15 years’ experience in academic staff development. Research interests cover a range of topics related to learning and teaching in the health professions, with a specific focus on strengthening postgraduate studies and academic writing. Much of her work is informed by the principles of transformative learning theory, with current projects intentionally looking to adopt a social justice agenda.

Susan is a NRF-rated researcher, an SU Teaching Fellow and a Fellow of the international Association of Medical Educationalists (AMEE). She serves on the AMEE Faculty Development Committee and is the past chair of the AMEE Doctoral Report Award committee. Currently an associate editor for AJHPE and Advance in Health Sciences Education, she has authored or co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
