Convener: University of California San Francisco

Leadership and mentorship are key elements to successful academic health programs. There is much written about the qualities that a strong and effective leadership should have.  Less is available on how to cultivate the essential skills central to the delivery of effective leadership and mentorship in the academic setting. This half day workshop will equip emerging leaders from academic health professions institutions with the skills to function adeptly as mentors and leaders in their institutions.

Learning Objectives will include understanding concepts and skills necessary to be effective mentors.

  1. Learn about mentoring tools and techniques, emotional intelligence and self-awareness to be effective leaders and mentors
  2. To explore how to be adept communicators, both in spoken and written word and to learn skills for handling difficult conversations and people.
  3. Enhance the effectiveness and engagement of frontline leaders with a focus on emphasizing diversity.
  4. To form a cohort of health professions leaders within AFREhealth interested in mentorship for sharing best practice
